About the Center

Preface

Director

The Disaster Control Research Center was founded in June, 1990 on purpose to research the disaster control technologies and systems aiming to reduce damage and influence. We research hazard and disaster caused by earthquakes and tsunami in an urbanized area and ensure the disaster research methods developed in the experimental facility for Earthquake Resistant Construction opened in 1972 and Tsunami Disaster Experimental Laboratory in 1981. This center was started in 1990 as Phase I with two laboratories; Earthquake Disaster Research Laboratory and Tsunami Engineering Laboratory. Then the center was reopened in 2000 (Phase II) with three laboratories; Earthquake Disaster Research Laboratory, Tsunami Engineering Laboratory and Disaster Potential Research Laboratory, to promote research and education on disaster mitigation, and to transfer develop the advanced and practical technologies.

The center has been again restarted with the new structure in 2010 as Phase III. The center is made up of two sections; Research and Development Section and Research and Promotion Section on mitigation of natural disaster such as earthquake, tsunami and flood. Research and Promotion Section consists of Disaster Mitigation Research Laboratory and Tohoku Regional Data Center for Natural Disasters. We add the Project Office which is established to collaborate with other fields in and out of the center. We would like to contribute to research and education of disaster mitigation and regional safety through development and transfer for the society.
